Game 1 - Word Game

Sa7b / ??? = friend / amie

l7rf jjay : B / ?

Nice one, Lise.

BTâTa = [large]???[/large]
Potatoes, pommes de terre.

Now to T.

Does ??? count?

Definitely.

So for me it’s an L…

Llâ… No… Non.

Next: L.

Lsân - tongue, which I don’t know how to say in French.

It’s langue, the same word for language.

N… Nmra, number, numéro…

Next R.

Rôda - ??? - graveyard. Another word I don’t know how to say in French.

So I’ll continue with ‘D’ (as we ignore the final ‘a’ in words)

Daruri / ??? = necessary, essential

lHrf jjay (the next letter) : i/y

Yd - ?? - hand.

7rf jai - ?, D.

dqq / ?? = to knock

l7rf jjay : q / ?

In French, graveyard is cimetière. It’s nice that you know the word in Darija. I often used the MSA word: mqbara.

Qfl - Lock - Cadenas.

L7rf jjay: L

Lâ7 - throw.

l7rf jjay - 7

What’s the darija word for grave? It occurred to me that I can (sort of) talk about the graveyard in darija, but not the actual grave.

I don’t know the word for ‘grave’, but I’ve heard another word for cemetery which sounds like the English word
‘macabre’ - maybe ‘maqrabr’ ?? There’s a bab in the medina wall in Tetouan called Bab Maqrabr (?) which is next to a cemetery.

OK, on with the game : Halwa = cake, sweets

l7rf jjay : w / u

Wajh - ??? - face.

l7rf jjay - h, ?

Maqbara is an MSA word for cemetery - more or less comes out to “place of graves” if translated literally. But the darija word bears no resemblance to this and I’m not sure if the word qabr (MSA for “grave”) is appropriate in colloquial Moroccan.

??? / hdr = to speak, to talk

l7rf jjay : r

According to my informed source ??? = grave in darija.

Rkhîs - ??? - Cheap.

l7rf jjay - S, for ?

Sam / ??? = to fast

l7rf jjay : m / ?

MrrD - ??? - to make sick.

l7rf jjay - D, ?.

??? / Drif = nice

l7tf jjay : f / ?
