Exercise 14 - 3lâsh?... 7ît?

3lâsh = Why?
7ît = la7qqâsh = Because…

We’ll keep it easy for you, so you either answer or ask a question at a time. So I’ll start asking a why question, and then the next person will answer with because, and then let the next person ask the next question. Always provide translations of what you write in Darija.

3lâsh mâ mshîtîsh lelkhdma lyôm?

[large]??? ?? ??? ??? ???[/large]
Why didn’t you go to work today?

Let’s keep them simple.

7it kont mrida
Because i was sick?
7it kont mrida
Because i was sick?
Yes, very good :).

Next question:
3lâsh mshîtî dghya?
[large]??? ??? ???[/large]
Why did you go fast/quickly?

7it kan fi kalb yel7qni
because there was a dog chasing me
7it kan fi kalb yel7qni
because there was a dog chasing me :D
Fi and yel7qni are to be replaced :).
7ît kân wâ7d lklb tâb3nî / kayjrî 3liyyâ, depending on how did the chasing go :D.

Next question:
3lâsh ma jbtîsh mzyân f l2imtî7ân?
[large]??? ?? ??? ??? ? ???[/large]
Why didn’t you do good (get a good mark) in the exam?

7it ma3ndeesh dyal bzaf waqt ndrousou mzian
because i didn’t have tine to study well?
7it ma3ndeesh dyal bzaf waqt ndrousou mzian
because i didn’t have tine to study well?
7ît mâ 3ndîsh, is for the present.
7ît mâ kânsh 3ndî, is for the past.
Bzzâf dyâl lwqt = a lot of time. You see, it has the same structure as in English, dyâl meaning of, so the order in your sentence has to be corrected.
As for studying, we usually use the word n7fD, although it means learning by heart*. We can also use nqra, which means also reading.

So the final sentence goes like:
7ît mâ kânsh 3ndî bzzâf dyâl lwqt bâsh n7fD.

Next
You ask a question using 3lâsh.

(*): No wonder the Moroccan educational system needs some drastic changes.

3lash elmghrebien ytkalmou bzzaf Francais?
Why do Moroccans speak too much French?
(that’s another reason i have trouble understanding )
“bash” means “to”= ??? ?

Yes.
3lash elmghrebien ytkalmou bzzaf Francais?
Why do Moroccans speak too much French?
Moroccans = Lmghârba.
They speak/talk = kayhdro.

So the sentence is:
3lâsh lmghârba kayhdro bzzâf b lfaransiyya?

Why, why! Did I use a single French word with you so far? I did not .
But if you mean why we are a French-speaking population, then it’s a result of the French colonization back in the 50s.
You may see in TV that some Moroccans speak mostly French, but that’s not the case of all Moroccans in our daily life. Sometimes I find it snobbish to speak French while you can speak Darija. But some Moroccan kids can’t help it, they were brought up that way, and they went to private schools where French is more valued than Arabic.
Does this answer your question?

No I didn’t mean you of course
haw is “kayhdro” spelled in Arabic ??? ?

Thank you for answering! it’s great however to know other languages.
Now I wanna try the “What does this mean” game. but first I’ll reply to your questions on “Salam :)”
No I didn’t mean you of course

No, I would spell that as “kay7Drô”. 7 for ? and D (in cap letters) for ? .
It’s: [large]???[/large]

You’re welcome :). Feel free to do so, I’ll still post a question for the next person who wants to work on this exercise.

Next question:
3lâsh Drbtî wldk?
[large]??? ??? ???[/large]
Why did you hit your son?

ma Drbtsh wldi, hit m3endish wld ghir lbnat.

wonderful, all those exercices on your forum!
ma Drbtsh wldi, hit m3endish wld ghir lbnat.

:^^: Très véridique comme réponse :^^:.
And thanks, keep working on them :).

Next one:
3lâsh gltîhâ l Omar?
[large]??? ??? ? ???[/large]

gltiha???
I know ‘glti’ = I was wrong
but gltiha , i was wrong her???

Oh , help!!
gltiha???
I know ‘glti’ = I was wrong
but gltiha , i was wrong her???

Oh , help!!
GhlTT = I made a mistake. (ghalaT = mistake)
Mâ kânsh 3ndî l7aqq = I was wrong.

Think again.

sorry!! to difficult, Hiba, Bnita… and all the others where are you???

A different way of transcription then:
3lash qltîhâ l Omar.

Hint: The verb is gâl, qâl…

Why did you say that to Omar?

Why did you speak to her about Omar ?

Hiba’s answer is more accurate. The “hâ” ending is translated by Hiba as “that” and actually refers to 7âja = thing. So you can basically translate the sentence to: “Why did you tell Omar?”
Onc’Kamel, you got lost a little bit :). Marylin too :hap:.

So now, let’s get back to the exercise, and answer that difficult question ;).
