Our public school system has a rule that you can’t attend pre-school unless a) you are impoverished, b) you have a disability or c) you speak a different language and need to learn English quickly. A friend of ours really wanted his son to go to the program, to give his wife a break, since she had other smaller kids to look after. They don’t just take your word for it that your child doesn’t speak English very well; they administer a test. During the test, one of the questions they asked Khalid was, “Is Tom a boy or a girl?” to which he answered, “Tom is a cat.” They tried a few more times, but Khalid insisted that Tom was a cat, not a boy or a girl. He got in to the program.
