Here’s an audio-excercise: a short tale in the dialect of Cueta (spanish enclave) by Francisco Moscoso Garcia.

hada kan wa7d T-Twiyyar kayemshi men Taqa n Taqa, men Taqa n Taqa

msha n 3and el-xayyaT, qal-lu: “xayyaT a l-xayyaT, xayyaT li j-jillaba awla

el-xayyaT xaf mennu, shebbar u xayyaT lu j-jillaba w
mli xayyaT lu z-zillaba, Tla3 n eS-STa7 bda kaygul: “wiT wiT wiT wiT,
3andi j-jilliba w es-sulTan ma 3andu shi, wiT wiT wiT wiT 3andi j-jiliba
w s-sulTan ma 3andu shi!”

qal es-sulTan “shenni kaygul hadak, shenni kaygul hadak?”
“qal lek 3andu j-jillaba w s-sulTan ma 3andu shi”

gal lum: “mshiw w 7ayydu l-u dik j-jillaba”. gal lum “w 7ayydu l-u j-jillaba”
w hawwdu w bda kayghanni: “wiT wiT wiT wiT, gharu menni 7ayydu li j-jillaba,
wiT wiT wiT wiT, gharu mennu 7ayydu lu j-jillaba”.

“shenni kaygul hadak, shenni kaygul hadak?” “gharna mennu 7ayydna l-u j-jillaba.”
gal lek "msiw roddu l-u j-jillaba. Tal3u raddu l-u j-jillaba.

bda kayghanni: "wiT wiT wiT wiT, xafu menni raddu li j-jillaba, wiT wiT wiT wiT,
xafu menni raddu li j-jillaba.

“shenni kaygul hadak?” “xafna mennu raddina lu j-jillaba.”
qal lu: “jibu li mekmul!” habbTu-h kamel u SerTu w mli ySerTu msha l bit el-ma.

dik es-sa3a dik T-Twiyyar xrej menn-u. kanet wa7d Taqa meftu7a w xrej 3la l-mdina
w bda kaygul: “wiT wiT wiT wiT, shft s-suwwa d s-sulTan kbira w smina qadd el-bab d l-mdina!”

shrit wa7d el-7alwa, saffita w ana mashya w hiya kaddub, ana mashya w hiyaa kaddub, ana
mashiya w hiyya kaddub, 7tta kan rja3 kull shi kdub.

And LOL for the story! Nice shamali (northern) accent, where did you get it from?
LOL at the end of the story. 7shôma too :D.

If anyone wants to try to translate the story, that’s a good exercise.

I’ll start (with a little help :wink:

There was a bird which went from window to window, picking up wool until it had enough to make a jellaba.
It went to the tailor and said, " Tailor, sew me a jellaba, or I’ll peck your eyes out!"

( I gather that ‘Taqa’ is a northern / shamali word for serjm = window )

The tailor was afraid of him, … and he sewed the jillaba for him, an when he finished,
he went up to the roof and said “wit wit. I have a jilaba and the sultan has nothing!”

I will give it a try although I need some help because I don’t understand everything…

qal es-sulTan “shenni kaygul hadak, shenni kaygul hadak?”
The Sultan said: what (or who??) said that?
“qal lek 3andu j-jillaba w s-sulTan ma 3andu shi”
He said to you: he has a jillaba and the Sultan doesn’t.

gal lum: “mshiw w 7ayydu l-u dik j-jillaba”. gal lum “w 7ayydu l-u j-jillaba”
He said to them (?): Go and take that jillaba away from him.

w hawwdu w bda kayghanni: “wiT wiT wiT wiT, gharu menni 7ayydu li j-jillaba,
wiT wiT wiT wiT, gharu mennu 7ayydu lu j-jillaba”.
And (hawwdu ??) and began to sing: twi twi twi twi, they (?) to me to take my jillaba …

That’s right. gal lum should read gal l-hum.

gharu mennu should read gharu men-u. ghar men/3la means to be jealous at.

hawwdu is the imperfect 3rd person plural of the verb ‘hawwed’ which I would translate here as ‘to go down’.

can you explain to me what shebber means in the phrase: el-xayyaT xaf mennu, shebbar u xayyaT lu j-jillaba w? I found “to hold” in the dictionary but I don’t know how to understand that.

Dag Elise,

in this context I would translate it as “…(he) took (the wool) and …”

šebbaR means
1 : to seize, to take hold of
2 : to catch
3 : to pick up
