Let's Chat

Hello Nuwwara the Traveler! Where did you stay in Egypt? Were you in Alexandria, Cairo, or elsewhere? Did you go with a group of students or on your own? Are there opportunities available to you via the German University System to spend, say, a year at the American University at Cairo? The SAIS out of Georgetown, in Washington DC, offers a competitive program to American students to earn, by test-performance either a full or a partial fellowship to study there over either a summer or a full calendar year.

If you were to take a year to pursue a fellowship in the Arabic speaking world, would you choose Egypt (a logical choice, due to its central position and the fact that its film industry has made Egyptian widely understood throughout the whole of the Arabic speaking world), or would you opt for a stay in, say, Tangiers, or in another place altogether?

I hope you had a good stay in Egypt and that you are recovering from the exhaustion which accompanies any such trip.

UmMaryam

I went on vacation. I had dreamed about that for about 14 years and finally I made it to Egypt. We started in Cairo went down the Nile all the way down till Abu Simbel back to Cairo and than also to Alexandria.

Yes, it’s possible by the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) to go to Cairo for a languge programm and they sponser also student who stay in any freigne contry to study there for a semester or a year.

First I wanted to go to Egypt for a year to study there, but than I didn’t made it do to personal reasons. And now it’s to late. Oh I thougt also about studing in Fes for a year.

Yes, it was really great. But now I have to concentrated a bit on something for university (some papers about Nagib Machfuz… so again Egypt) before I have again time for Darija.

nice…nuwwara…
Glad u enjoyed it

Nuwwara, I’m glad you enjoyed your trip to Egypt. I almost took the fellowship to Cairo at one point, but then opted for one in Tangiers instead.

Oh, and I forgot to say how impressed I was when you said you made it through a 700-something paged Mahfouz novel in one week. Wow; that would be difficult for a native speaker. And now you are writing some papers about Mahfouz? About his work in general, or about the circumstances of his life? That sounds like a big assignment.

No, I read the book in German and I’m reading it again to concentrate on my assignements. I’m writing about Bayn l-Qasrayn (English: A Palace Walk) I should have finished that a long time ago. The first paper is about the revolution from 1919 how it’s presented in the book and how the changes also happend to the caracters of the novel. The 2nd is about the presentation of the room(s) in the novel.

Ma Shaa Allaah ala ayyi Hal. I am impressed even with your reading of it in German. It is a long book and, although I have not read it, I dare say that it is quite complicated and full of nuance. Good luck with the assignment, and try not to forget about sleeping once in a while… Bye for now. UmMaryam
