Maybe Spain, with la valla de Melilla? khe khe khe

??? what’s your problem with him?

Nice story about the peacock. Thanks Ouazzani.
How about we have a go at translating it ? (maybe in a simplified version, short simple sentences, for us darija-learners

I’ll start :
kan ya ma kan (once upon a time), f l-wqt d l-khalifa Harun al-Rachid, 3ash f l-maghreb waHed rjal 7adeq bezzaf w fayeq bezzaf.

clever = 7adeq ??
witty = fayeq ??

If you want to continue, maybe this should be moved to another 'thread '?

had l-blad b7al jazira kebira, lakin ‘continent’ (this country is like a big island, but it’s a continent)

what’s ‘continent’ in Arabic ( I presume there isn’t a specific darija word ?) ?

Easy, especially for LA !!

Usturaliya

We come from zi down under

your turn - nuba dyalek - LA, to give us a clue

and please scroll back to my note about Ouazzani’s peacock tail tale (for pp not familiar with this word in English, tale = story)

oh - and - Madridista’s clue ‘blad fiha 7iT fchkel’ - must be S-Sin !?

??? what’s your problem with him?[/quote]
he killed moulay driss ( the 1st king of morocco )

and yes lise that was china

bled f-afriqia li kayn fawda dimaaaaa

Don’t know if that made sense, but what I meant was, An African country where there’s always chaos

Thanks for your comment. You had a good idea. I tried to translate a bit more, but we need someone to check it. I changed a word of your translation, but it does’nt mean it’s incorrect, I just have never heard:

[sup]kan ya ma kan… it’s told that in the times of the khalifa Harun al-Rashid, lived in Morocco a man so clever and witty, that his name traveled from mouth to mouth until the bigger and better city of the muslim world, Bagdad, known at these times as “The Round City”. The Khalifa himself wanted to meet this maghribi, so he called him to the palace.[/sup]

kan ya ma kan, f l-wqt d l-khalifa Harun al-Rachid, 3ash f l-maghreb waHed rjal 7adeq / mtowar w fayeq bezzaf w Hwa m3aruf fl3alam kamel, 7tta f l madina elli kbira w 7ssana fl mudun muslimun, smita Bagdad. Hadi l madina ma3arufa bl ism l mdina mdwura. L khalifa raso bra itlq had l maghribi, iden a3it lo fl kaSar dialo.

[sup]After a long travel, the maghribí arrived before the great Harun al-Rashid, and this invited him to a suculent meal, with delicious drinks. They were chatting till the khalifa wanted to mock at the maghribí, proving his cleverness.

He said:

  • Do you know, my dear new friend, that if the world is like a bird, Bagdad The round city is the eye, and al-maghreb the ass tail.

So, the maghribí didn’t wait a second to answer:

  • Then, this bird is a peacok.

That’s the reason why al-maghreb is also knwon as “the tail of the peacok”.[/sup]

This one I found in a textbook of classical arabic with a french version, so I remembered as you can read it, and translated to english.

But I have a loooooot of nice stories in pure darija, but they are usually wrote in arabic alfabet, and not translated. This is the way that I study: I translate the tales or stories, keep in my head (studiyng it) and I tell it later to other people. They usually fall down laughing. I think I never completed a tale I tried to tell… :hap: but I learned a lot.

Let me know if you need some scans.

Isn’t anyone gonna guess? Open up your geography books and get searching!

@ Ouazzani Thanks. It would be fantastic if you could post some of the stories. I can read and write Arabic script and I’m sure others can, too. ( And for any non-Arab darija-learners who can’t, I would highly recommend that you learn it - it’s not hard, honestly ! If you don’t believe me, try learning Chinese first, then I guarantee you’ll find Arabic dead easy)

As we all know, it’s really hard to find reading materials in darija, so it would be really great if we could have a thread here with such materials.

To continue the translation : men b3d Safar Twil / Triq Twil wSel f kaSar dyal Harun el-Rachid l-kbir …
( Native spreakers please correct :ok: )

@ Admin. Could you please move this to a new thread. shukran.

@ LA blad f ifriqa fih lfawda dima could it be / imken : the Sudan ?

Correct

Sudan is always on the news here in Oz for some sort of human rights breach, according to the media.

tfaddali, your turn again

blad sghir bezzaf, mwaTi bezzaf, fih bezzaf d mghraba. (a very small and very flat country with lots of Moroccans.)

LA and everybody - aren’t you going to have a go at translating the story ? (see above - scroll back a bit)

lise_c, i’m no good at translating, still a beginner

Holland?

No worries, mate !

-and holanda, correct - nuba dyalek merra okhra / your turn again
